Starting on the hearing health care journey can be quite
an emotional experience. It is often difficult for a person to realise
that their hearing is failing. Hearing levels usually deteriorate over a
period of time and it is other people who notice the difficulties first.
Family members might notice that the television is a bit too loud or
that the person is starting to sit apart from a conversation at the
dinner table.
Sometimes the comments from family and friends can be
hurtful and they might make comments like: “he hears when he wants to”
or “she’s not interested in anything anymore”. This can make the hearing
impaired person feel defensive and they might think that it is other
people who are at fault because they don’t speak clearly. Hearing
impaired people often say that other people mumble.
Hearing loss is often misunderstood. Many people with
hearing loss hear well in some situations and with some people. Hearing
loss is not usually an all or nothing situation. It is rare for a person
to hear nothing; usually they lose the clarity of hearing. Sometimes a
hearing impaired person will hear a lot but they will get things mixed
up. Hearing impaired people sometimes get odd looks from other people
because they have not understood what is being said and they have made a
completely inappropriate comment!
It is difficult for the person with the hearing loss to
move along the journey to better communication until a hearing test has
been done and the results explained. The earlier a hearing loss is
detected the better it is so that the hearing impaired person does not
start isolating themselves from the outside world.
The attitude of “it’s just too hard to go out” is a very
common complaint. The longer you put off doing something about your
hearing problem, the harder it will be to get a good result. As I say to
all my clients, you have lived in a quiet world for quite some time and
then all of a sudden someone like myself puts amplification in your ears
and it all comes flooding back straight away. That is why a common
complaint of hearing aid wearers is “everything is too loud”. Here at
Shire Hearing Centres, we choose the right device and ensure that you
get the information to help you acclimatise to our noisy world.
So if you are nodding your head and hoping you’re
smiling in the right places, turning the TV up or struggling to have a
conversation especially when there is background noise, you need to ring
and make an appointment today. Our phone number is 9544 4466, that’s
9544 4466.
Your hearing health journey can start now. Happy
Hearing!!
