  • More chance of feedback as microphone and receiver are very close.
  • More prone to dampness
  • Acoustically if low frequency hearing levels are good- then you may suffer what is called the “occlusion effect”- that is it may sound like you are in an echo chamber and your own voice sounds far too overwhelming when you speak

RITE

Receiver In The Ear

  • ADVANTAGES
  • DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
  • If any breakdowns, just change receiver. Client not without aid. The receiver is a different part to the hearing aid itself therefore does not affect internal workings of aids.
  • If client’s hearing levels decline, just change to more powerful receivers.
  • Less feedback
  • Quite discreet
  • Good directionality
  • Not limited to features
  • Is good for manipulating/Remote available
  • Acoustically, if low freq are good – this is good
DISADVANTAGES
  • Because receiver is in the ear it cannot tolerate dampness …then the hearing aid can become intermittent with the moisture.
  • Can sometimes affect glasses wearers when taking on and off.

This type of hearing instrument is suitable for all types of hearing loss. It is lightweight, very small & almost invisible to others-people would swear you were wearing one. It comes in a wide range of colours to suit your personality and style-from subtle to bold colours and trendy make these hearing instruments cosmetically appealing.

This style is also easy on the ear, for two reasons:

  1. The sound travels in a less noticeable, ultra-thin sound wire straight into a receiver sitting inside your ear, which means even clearer and more natural sound quality.
  2. The ear piece has a better fit and does not totally block your ear making it comfort and easy to wear- It’s like you’re not wearing one at all!

BTE Phonak Hearing Aid

Classic BTE

Behind The Ear

  • ADVANTAGES
  • DISADVANTAGES
ADVANTAGES
  • For only mild to moderate losses- the hearing aids are still quite small and discreet
  • Good to fit if client is prone to dampness in the ear and/or prone to ear infections.
  • Great to keep clean- the mould can detach from the hearing aid itself and be cleaned
  • If any breakdowns, just clean the mould and change if necessary . Client not without aid (if spare is available).
  • Less chance of feedback
  • Acoustically if low frequency hearing levels are good- then you may suffer what is called the “occlusion effect”- that is it may sound like you are in an echo chamber and your own voice sounds far too overwhelming when you speak….this is the best model to fit for those people who may suffer from occlusion.
DISADVANTAGES
  • Quite large and cannot be easily disguised if the hearing aid wearer has a severe to profound hearing loss.

BTE has become smaller and more elegant over the years. They come in a variety of sizes and now even have mini-that is smaller versions of the BTE style. The BTE has a case behind the ear that houses the electronics of the device, and the sound is sent through a tube in a custom earpiece that is moulded to fit perfectly with your ear. BTE’s come in a variety of colours to match your hair or stone tone. The larger models come with larger batteries and amplifier to meet the needs of people who need a more powerful instrument.
